Why Gut Health Is So Important

When you get asked to go on a wellness retreat to Ibiza you hardly say no do you? When I was asked recently to spend 4 glorious days in Ibiza with Renew Life to learn all about gut health whilst staying at the stunning Ca Na Xica resort, I didn’t hesitate. Gut health is a hot topic these days after all and probiotics are popping up everywhere from skincare to supplements. There is so much to learn about bacteria and how it can actually heal you in its best form. So, let’s talk about why gut health is so damn important!

Ca Na Xica Resort, Ibiza

Renew Life is a leading digestive care and cleansing brand with a wide range of probiotics and cleanses. Let me say I am a BIG fan of a cleanse and I’m particularly interested in gut health these days – I even ordered a microbiome test which tests the levels of bacteria in your gut via a sample (sorry so not glamorous!). I am still waiting on the results of the test and can’t wait to share them but first let me tell you about how I first got interested in probiotics.

Breakfast at Ca Na Xica

I used to travel (and still do) A LOT. Trips around Asia, Africa and South America were common and on every trip, I would often end up with a stomach bug. I spent a month in Vietnam with my aunt and uncle who loved travelling as well and I noticed that my uncle NEVER got ill and could eat whatever he wanted. And when I say whatever he wanted let me give you an example…beetle vodka, snails bought off a seller on the beach out of a plastic bag, fruit off the fruit stand without washing it. I wondered how in the hell his gut was so strong until he told me that he always took probiotics. So that was the first clue.

The second reason I got interested in gut health is that I’m often bloated. And by bloated I mean I look 3 months pregnant. It’s really not nice to be that bloated and I stopped wearing form-fitting clothes after a while because I just didn’t want to suck it all in anymore. It even got to the point where I had to unbutton the top button of my jeans after lunch because the bloating got so bad. So, therefore my love affair with probiotics began again.

And being in Ibiza with Renew Life was another reminder that it’s SO important to take care of your gut health. I learned so many interesting facts while I was there from the incredible and gorgeous Dr. Sara Celik who is a Naturopathic Doctor and Spokesperson for Renew Life. It was clear after a few talks with Dr. Sara that gut health is even more important than I ever considered.

Ca Na Xica

Actually, as Dr. Sara pointed out on the trip, it was Hippocrates that said that all imbalances and diseases begin in the gut and you will soon see why. 70% of your immune system is in your gut – how crazy is that? There are also 100 million brain cells found in your gut – another shocker. And 90% of the body’s serotonin is made in your gut so if you are feeling down it’s possible that if you make your gut happier and healthier you could actually feel better mentally. I’m not making this stuff up!

So back to the bloating and uncomfortable feeling I was getting before I started taking the Renew Life Ultimate Flora Women’s Formula with 50 billion bacteria. Some causes of gut imbalances are pollution (THANKS London), sugar, medication, stress and alcohol. It’s no surprise my gut hasn’t been happy. I live an incredibly hectic life that is certainly full of stress. I’m a workaholic, I live in big city and I often drink as I’m out at events all week. Since I went to Ibiza I’ve really made a conscious effort to cut down on the drinking. I don’t usually have any sugar so that’s good and also don’t ever take antibiotics (which if you do have to take it can take up to A YEAR to replace all the good bacteria)!

So, what have I been taking to restore my own gut health? Well, after a consultation with Dr. Sara I was recommended to take the Renew Life LiverDTX for one month as I have estrogen dominance so a clean and healthy liver helps to break down excess estrogen in the body as well as additional toxins. With the Renew Life Liver DTX you are also recommended to take the Renew Life Fibre Smart capsules as fibre soaks up and sweeps out toxins. Of course, alongside of these things I have been taking the Renew Life Ultimate Flora Women’s Formula probiotics.

So what’s the result? Well I can definitely say there is much less bloating than before! Finally, I can do the top button on my jeans again! If you aren’t taking probiotics now I would highly recommend them as part of your daily regime. They honestly help make your gut happy and less bloated. The cleanses from Renew Life are also really good – I’m loving the LiverDTX programme I’m on – I’m already halfway through!

Jamie, I am so into this blog. This summer I started taking probiotics. I feel so much different. I am interested into hearing the results of the liver detox. I am having issues with my thyroid and can’t help but think a major lifestyle change is in my future. Thanks for this. I would love to see Ibiza.

Oh I’m so glad you like it and yes, probiotics helped me a lot too! The liver cleanse is going well and yes I think it’s always best to just try and be as healthy as you can and make good choices. I’ve cut out a lot of meat, processed foods, etc. and I don’t eat that anymore and I think it’s helped a lot!

Oh I’m so glad you like it!! Yes I got the microbiome test back and it was very interesting. I got an 8/10 for diversity flora and the main recommendation it said was that I don’t synthesise Vit B5 very well so to have more of it! There were certain vitamins that I don’t have the gut flora to properly synthesize but I think the main one was Vit B5. yes would be lovely to catch up and I hope you are well!
