Interiors Series: Creating a Relaxing Space of Your Own

When I was a child, I used to like to hide in cardboard boxes and create my own mini world. As an adult I suppose I’ve forgotten that it’s still important to focus on creating a relaxing space where you can feel inspired. In the craziness of moving house recently and all the chaos of being surrounded by boxes for months (as well as tripping over paint tins and not being able to find a pair of socks), I’ve realised more than ever that even despite the chaos of the flat, I still need a little corner to call my own – to be able to work, relax or unwind.

Creating a Relaxing Space of Your Own

Everyone would benefit from creating a corner of their own that is de-cluttered and where they can get a little bit creative with home accessories, rugs or mirrors. I’ve done exactly that this week and it’s made all the difference in the world, becoming the place I run to when the chaos of the rest of the flat starts to get to me.

I started off first in the bedroom. I needed a place where I could comfortably sit and read and work but also where I could try on clothes and put on make-up (I am also a fashion and beauty blogger, so having these spaces is vital). My first thought was comfortable flooring. I’ve always wanted a really cosy, shaggy rug so picked the Argos Home Bliss Rug in Cream especially for this purpose. When it arrived I couldn’t have been happier. It’s soft and gives a lovely, cosy feel to the corner and it makes the floor a lovely place to sit while doing make-up in the mirror. And the size was a match made in heaven – it fits perfectly in the whole corner which completely transformed the space. It’s blissfully soft, deep and cushioned (and also handmade) – how good is that?

And that leads me to mirrors. I’m not joking when I say I haven’t owned a full-length mirror for years and have had to resort in the past to using a hand held mirror to try to view my whole outfit (in conclusion – not helpful, especially when you have to write about fashion!). Therefore I nearly cried with joy when the Argos Home Everyday Luxury Full Length Cheval Mirror arrived. It’s BEAUTIFUL! I love that it’s a freestanding mirror so you can easily move it to another location if you wish. You also don’t have to worry about hanging it off the wall and therefore putting holes in your wall in order to hang it. The frame is also fully mirrored as well so you can see your full look in all its glory. With the rug underfoot, this makes a perfect spot to try on clothes or indulge in a skincare routine.

Another thing to think about when creating a corner space is clutter. I’ve got so much clutter in my life it’s not even funny! Therefore I couldn’t resist the Argos Home Large Fabric Ottoman in Grey. It’s chic and also doubles as a seat for one small person. Here I can store bedding and cushions as well as a few other bits because the great thing about this ottoman is that it has compartments so if you want to also store other items (for me it would be make-up or skincare products) then you certainly can. I love the fabric and the grey colour – perfectly on trend and a great match with my charcoal walls. You can also conveniently fold this ottoman flat if you ever do want to store it or move it.

From the bedroom I moved into the living room. My living room at the moment is a mess from moving house so creating a corner space with a bit of peace and serenity was vital to my mental wellbeing. For this corner I chose the chic Argos Home Feliz Ombre Rug which again goes perfectly with my walls and floors with tones of beige, charcoal and greys throughout. The rug is super soft but it’s also hard-wearing which is why I chose it for the living room as there is more foot traffic there as opposed to the bedroom where I went for the softer, cosier rug. I love that it adds a touch of style to my otherwise beige (and slightly boring) carpet!

I also wanted my corner in the living room to be one where I could work and read and in order to do that, you need good lighting. I absolutely loved the look of the Argos Home Curva Floor Lamp in Copper. First off I love the copper trend in general so this adds a nice, fresh modern look and I also like the fact that the lamp is long and slim so it doesn’t take up much room. Flat space tends to veer on the small side in London so any space-saving accessories are much appreciated! The light is perfect for reading or working as well and it comes with a floor switch. Because I like to sit on the floor this is really helpful to save my legs from standing up.

A statement chair is a must-have in any corner of the room and I couldn’t resist the Argos Home Fabric Tub Chair in teal. The chair is so lovely and also goes well having a nice faux fur throw added to it, in particular the Argos Home Premium Faux Fur Throw in dark grey. I’m telling you sitting on this chair in my corner with my faux fur throw wrapped around me and a hot cup of tea (or wine) is BLISS. It’s a perfect place to work or rest – the important point is that this corner is there for you when you need it.

Last but not least to complete my little living room corner I added the Argos Home Midnight Opulence End Table in Bronze. I absolutely love the smoked black glass marble effect top and it’s also at a perfect height for me to sit on the floor on a cushion and work from my laptop on the table. It’s super stylish as well as an end table – a simple vase with fresh flowers and a book gives it just the touch you need! I also appreciate that this has a top glass shelf and a bottom marbled shelf so you can also store items on the bottom shelf as well – another space-saving gem.
