Bring in the New: Fresh Beauty Launches of the Week

There are always new and exciting launches in the world of beauty. The great news is that improvements and innovations in science and technology means that our beauty products are working harder than ever for us. This week is no different. I bring you the best of the new launches this week, tried and tested by yours truly.

Simple Micellar Water

Simple is known for bringing to us simple and affordable skincare that works on all skin types and especially for sensitive skin. I was invited to the Mondrian spa to test the new Micellar Cleansing Water and consult with Dr. Phillippa Lowe, one of the UK’s leading skin experts.

She was able to explain all about the unique formation of micellar water. Micellar water cleanses the skin without requiring any rinsing. Possessing small tails that are attracted to oil and make-up, each micelle molecule works hard to lift away and dissolve dirt and grime as soon as it comes into contact with skin. This has the look and feel of plain water (although it is triple-filtered to make it super clean and free from iron, magnesium and calcium found in hard water – hello London water!). I found it removed my make-up quickly and efficiently, even my stubborn eye-make-up. The micellar water can also replace toner as it contains Vitamin B3, Vitamin C and Glycerin so it leaves skin soft and smooth. A winner at £4.49!

Bondi Sands

This brand is Australia’s #1 self-tanning brand and it has now reached the UK shores, just in time for spring (how timely)! This brand is quite new, having only launched in 2012 and quickly became a cult classic in Australia. I am a big fan of self-tanning after seeing how much real tanning can damage the skin. After a three-month safari in Africa in the strong sun, I could tell my skin was getting more wrinkly and sun spots were starting to appear. So while I don’t condone the occasional sunbathing (we all love it), I do rely heavily now on self-tan to give me that gorgeous golden tone in the summer.

The range is launching exclusively into Superdrug nationwide and is quite affordable. I have tested this myself – using the light/medium self-tanning foam on my legs and the dark self-tanning foam on my upper body. I am really happy with the result. No streaks, no orange tones and the whole range smells of coconut so it doesn’t have that usual unpleasant smell associated with self-tanners. The foam is priced at £14.99.

Another product from the range I am excited about is the Gradual Tanning Milk for the Face. It is enriched with Vitamin E and Aloe Vera so is a great product to use while on holiday as a substitute for your regular face moisturiser.

Another thing I liked about this range is that you can actually wash it off in 30 minutes (although for a deeper tan it is suggested to leave it on for six hours). However, if you are in a rush and need a quick glow, this makes a great time-saver. I rinsed mine off after a couple of hours and was still very pleased by the natural result. Now bring on the sun so I can change into shorts!

Morgan Taylor (Cinderella collection)

Everyone wants to feel like Cinderella at the ball (after the prince falls in love with her of course) and now you can get closer to that feeling with the Cinderella collection by Morgan Taylor. This is a gorgeous limited-edition collection tied in with the upcoming release of the new Cinderella movie. And if you think this collection is for kids, think again. There is only one glitter nail polish in the collection and even this is grown up.

I am usually not a fan of glitter but this is a very understated glitter, that looks more like a metallic with extra shimmer. I used the metallic baby blue ‘Best Ball Gown Ever’ (which matches Cinderella’s gown of course) as a base and topped it with ‘If the Slipper Fits’ sparkling shimmer/glitter shade. The result? A grown up Cinderella. I’m already in love.

Origins is one of those genius brands who use plant science to come up with brilliant products. This time they have used the power of plant science to come up with the answer for skin’s quarter-life crisis: Original Skin Renewal Serum with Willowherb. This targets quarter-life skin concerns such as rough texture, enlarged pores, stressed skin, flaws and loss of radiance. Sign me up!

The texture is a light pink, gel-like formula that feels refreshing and sinks into skin like a dream. It almost feels like a primer and doesn’t leave the skin oily at all, like some serums. In fact it does work like a primer by blurring imperfections but at the same time actively trying to fix them.

So what is Willowherb? The Canadian Willowherb helps restore skin’s clarity and luminosity and has been used traditionally as a herbal supplement to treat medical ailments. This product launches from 27th February with a full national launch on 13th March. Priced at £32.00.

Salon Science

This is a brand who uses plant science power for hair and have done some impressive things in the lab using stem cells from both Swiss apples and Swiss grapes for hair renewal. The scalp has been largely ignored until recently but now I am seeing more and more products aimed at scalp health. Salon Science is one of the brands who have always focused on scalp health with a variety of scalp serums on the market. Now they have come out with a scalp scrub. I am huge fan of face scrubs so was very excited to try my first scalp scrub.

Because of the nozzle shaped application tip, this can be applied directly to the scalp. I tried it and the granules are very fine and feel refreshing and soothing to the scalp. This is a pre-shampoo treatment that is to be applied to damp hair. Once you have applied it directly to the scalp, you then massage it in and then leave on for 5-10 minutes (perfect timing to wash your face and shave your legs in the meantime). This felt especially satisfying on my hairline and on the scalp area on the sides and near my temples.

This would be a brilliant treatment for men as well, especially those who suffer from dandruff as it would be even easier to apply with short hair. It also contains the water-binding compounds of a rare organic cactus to hydrate and smooth so for anyone suffering from an itchy and dry scalp, here is your solution. My head did feel lighter and particularly invigorated after using this.
