As London is going through a heat wave at the moment and pollution levels are always on the rise I thought it would be great to do a post about anti-pollution and sun care beauty must-haves. If you don’t know already you should be wearing an SPF EVERY SINGLE DAY! Prevention is always better than the cure I say and the biggest regret I have in regards to my skin to-date is that I didn’t wear enough sunscreen growing up. Unfortunately there wasn’t that much education or warnings about it to take seriously enough. In my day and age, the more tan you had, the cooler you looked.
Luckily I’ve smartened up and now am super careful about SPF. But now I’ve got pollution to think about as well! I never considered pollution previously before moving to London but I did noticed that I started getting hyperpigmentation when I got here and also lots of spots. Correlation? I think so. Literally never had an issue with either in my life and now I’m fighting them off on a daily basis. So I wanted to put a little post together to highlight that we should think about these things and wanted to recommend some products that I think are good when it comes to prevention.
So first let’s talk about sun care…
If you are going on holiday or even out in the sun in your day-to-day life I really recommend Clarins. I’ve picked my favourite three suncare products from them below.
The Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Cream for Face with SPF 30 is a great product that I took with me to Morocco last year. This moisturises and helps protect against UV rays and prevent sun-induced age spots. I like that it is meant especially for the face so it doesn’t clog pores.
I have very fair skin and took this Clarins Sun Care Oil Spray SPF 30 with me to South Korea last year where it was really hot, sunny and humid. I absolutely love a sun protection oil because it sinks in so easily (and I use oils anyways like they are going out of style) so prefer this formula to a cream. This gave me a nice sheen as well so across my decolletage there was an added benefit of a glow!
I really felt this protected me from getting any kind of sunburn at all and I carry this around as a serious sun essential for any holidays. You can use this on your hair too so if you are headed to the beach, apply this on your strands and pull back into a slick bun. You will have to wash it later anyways!
And for when you have been out in the sun all day you need to renourish your skin with the Clarins After Sun Moisturizer. This is literally a drink for thirsty sun-parched skin so pack it in your bag because I always think I never need it until I really do!
Now let’s talk about pollution, another nasty skin attacker. I was really excited to hear about the new Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Hydrating Shield with SPF 50. This product is really innovative and not only protects against pollution but also delivers some serious sun protection with SPF 50. The fact is pollution really does age the skin and I honestly believe my skin has gotten a lot worse since I moved to London. It is also a fact that 80% of all signs of skin ageing are due to the environment whether that is the sun, pollution or smoky environments.
I’ve tried and loved the Elizabeth Arden Prevage line before so this new addition to the range is something to get excited about. The formula is to be applied as the last step in your skincare routine so it’s best to apply after your serum as a moisturiser or you can apply it over your moisturiser.
The thing I love the most about this product is the tint in the cream and optical diffusers. This gives a lovely glow to the skin and the tint works with all skin tones. So think of this is your key protection in the fight against pollution and UVB rays – it blocks out 98% of UVB rays and contains a powerful antioxidant blend to maintain skin health in the most polluted of cities.
Another important step in pollution damage control is cleansing! It’s very important to wash your face in the evening and I’ve made a new goal to start washing mine as soon as I get home from work. A lovely way to get off the grime in a really soothing way is with the Merumaya Melting Cleansing Balm. I’m recommending this product because it’s almost like a soothing ritual in itself.
When you come back from work after a frazzled day and want to take off your make-up (and also the pollution with it), simply massage this onto your skin as it really does melt and it smells good too. It gets rid of make-up and dirt and when you add water it turns into a milk so it’s easy to remove. I love this product for that very reason – with some balms I find it very very hard to get off of my face and sometimes that has left me with spots. However, this turns into a cleansing milk so it comes off very easily. So if you like balms but don’t like the residue they leave then try this!
