Ah the seasonal changes – sometimes welcomed, sometimes not but needless to say they always require a change-up in the skincare regime. With the start of fall and cooler weather that means that the heaters will be turned on and the air in the rooms we are in whether that’s the office or at home is going to be much drier. With the coming of fall, I tend to go for soothing and ultra-hydrating products as my skin tends to get dehydrated quite easily. And as I am getting older, I worry about losing that bounce and plumpness to the skin. So therefore I’ve put together some of my favourite quenching skincare for fall.
So enter in some new fall favourites in the realm of skincare that I’ve found super quenching and soothing to my skin. The first one is the new Vichy Quenching Mineral Mask. This is literally like a water glove to the face -the formula is a soothing and hydrating gel which basically does to your skin what a plant feeder full of water does to a drying plant. I really love this mask and it’s not expensive at all – somewhere around a tennerish.
Then there is the Roger & Gallet Le Soin Aura Mirabilis Extra Fine Cleansing Mask. This cleansing mask feels oh-so-soothing and super luxurious to the skin. You can use this as a hydrating cleanser and also as a mask. All of Roger & Gallet products are based on botanical and apothecary recipes so are infused with plant power. This one is infused with 18 distilled plants to be exact! So what I like to do is first cleanse my face with this beauty and then apply it as a mask to my clean skin after – lovely and smells amazing.
Talking about cleansers I also know a good one that has just launched and is perfect for the autumn season. The cleanser is from a brand called SAMAYA, an all-natural skincare brand based on Ayurvedic principles, which helps you achieve samadosha or a ‘perfect balance’ in your life, beginning with your skin. What this means is that you are recommended products according to what type of dosha you have. In order to determine this you have to answer a series of questions like ‘do you prefer spicy foods?’ Or ‘do you get cold easily?’
Through this questionnaire I’ve discovered my dosha is Kapha. Kaphas are ‘laidback and easy-going with a stable, steady energy level. Often has a strong physical frame but can be lethargic or apathetic if out of balance. Takes a relaxed, reasonable approach to life and can be compassionate, gentle and kind. Skin is usually thick and pale, can be radiant and glowing, but with clogged pores or excess oil when out of balance.’
Therefore, based on my dosha, I was given the Kapha Hydrating Cleanser which is a lovely cream-based cleanser that is perfect for mornings and great for skin that needs to be soothed and nourished and not stripped of essential oils. I use this cleanser in the morning to soothe and a different cleanser in the evening to remove make-up and pollutants. Developed with powerful Ayurvedic botanicals such as Ashwagandha, Sandalwood, Vetivert and Frankincense, this cleanser helps to remove make-up and lift impurities, leaving skin feeling balanced, purified, softer and more radiant.
To assist in the removal of that dirt and those pollutants I have just started using the Magnitone Barefaced Cleansing Brush which feels amazing on the skin – like a gentle, toning massage. The brush is great for massaging the skin and therefore boosting circulation which is going to improve the look and feel of your skin. You can use the brush in upwards motions to tone – good for people who clench their jaw all day like I tend to do! The Magnitone brush is great as well because the bristles are not too abrasive – they are actually really soft and soothing. I’m adding that as a key point because I have another cheaper cleansing brush that has really hard bristles that are too abrasive for my skin. I love the Magnitone one.
Recently in regards to moisturizer I am loving Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream – this is a simple but truly hydrating and effective cream that is perfect for everyday. It’s not greasy but it is lovely and hydrating with a perfect medium texture – a great product for fall. I also love that it comes in a super-size version – 125ml so it lasts forever and ever. For each limited edition Ultra Facial Cream 125ml sold, Kiehl’s will give £10 to the MTV Staying Alive Foundation!
At night in the fall I like to switch to an oil. For this I have been using the Dermalogica Phyto Replenish Oil which is simply amazing. This soothes, boosts moisture levels and is great for anti-ageing. Dermalogica in general makes great products -they save money on the pretty packaging and invest their money in serious skincare that has great results. It’s one of my favourite brands that although might be slightly pricey, is one of those that is worth the price. The oil contains Camellia, Orchid and Chia Seed Oils which all help to improve the skin’s barrier function which is perfect for the coming colder weather!
Colder weather requires a soothing, nourishing skincare. I like to think of seasonal skincare the same as I think of a seasonal diet. In the summer you may like to dine on salads and light, refreshing meals and in the winter your body needs something more soothing and nourishing such as soups and stews.
