I’m pretty picky when it comes to make-up and I like high quality. I am absolutely addicted to lipsticks in particular – they are the one item I just can never have too many of! I’m trying to have a little more fun with colour this summer and bring a new twist to old favourites – from lipstick to mascara. From matte lipsticks that don’t feel matte to a mascara with colour that makes the eyes pop – these are my picks for great make-up buys with a twist for the summer.
Lancome Matte Shaker – Pink Power and Kiss Me Cherie
I absolutely love these lipsticks because they are a stain and a matte lipstick in one so if you are looking for long-lasting colour then you have come to the right place. The formula comes out in a liquid and then turns matte after a few minutes. I love that this is also a stain and I actually experimented with applying this very lightly like a lip liner to define the lips and then smudging in the colour towards the centre of the lip for a really natural and gorgeous lip stain. These are perfect for summer because you can put them on as a sheer colour. These also don’t feel like your normal drying matte lipstick because they have a water-in-oil emulsion so they feel really moisturising and the colour doesn’t move. I love the cushion applicator as well because it makes applying it really easy and natural too. These are definitely a twist on both a stain and a matte lipstick – something of a hybrid and the best of both worlds. Such a good lipstick and highly recommended!
I first got into Laura Geller from her ‘baked’ blushes. I am usually not a powder foundation girl but I gave this one a go on the weekend when I wear minimal make-up and was pleasantly pleased. It’s super easy to apply and the foundation actually adapts to your skin tone – how clever! It can also be applied dry or wet which is interesting. Dry provides medium-to-full coverage and wet is more for full coverage finish. You can also build it up so if you want just a little you can go for that no-make-up make-up look or more for a night out. I like it for the no-make-up look so it’s perfect for me on the weekend. A powder foundation – but with a twist.
Marc Jacobs is having a bit of fun this season with coloured mascaras! I love this idea and actually if you don’t like wearing blue or green eyeshadows then it’s nice to edge it up with a bit of colour mascara. I’ve got the colour Think Ink which is a lovely navy blue colour. Also the O! Mega mascara is enriched with essential oils and Vitamins B5 and C so you are helping lashes while wearing the mascara. The colour is amazing with blue, green or hazel eyes. The colour catches in the light as well and is perfect for the lighter and more carefree days of summer. Mascara – but not your typical black.
I recently attended the Glamour Beauty Festival where I listened to Hung Vanngo who is the Global Make-Up Artist for Marc Jacobs Beauty, among many other talents. Hung demonstrated on stage how to achieve the perfect ‘fresh faced’ look using a key product – the MJ Highliner in Brownie. What he did is line the waterline of the eyes with Brownie which is a longwear, waterproof eyeliner – both the upper and lower waterline – which makes the eyes really pop out. What he also did with this that was really interesting is smudge a bit on the upper lash line and then extend this out resulting in a very natural look without having to use eyeshadow. The reason Brownie works in this case is that it is a longwear eyeliner. This will not budge basically and it’s great if you want to line the waterline or tightline on the lashes but keep it natural at the same time. So this is an eyeliner that can also double as an eyeshadow – just another way to use it!
I know I’ve spoken about Marc Jacobs beauty so much but it’s just SO GOOD. MJ has just launched a liquid lipstick that is da bomb. Basically your typical matte liquid lipstick is quite drying right? Well this version is still matte (with a slight satin sheen) but moisturising. And it lasts ages. This dusty rose scent in Slow Burn really suits my skin tone and I absolutely love the texture and formula. The pigment is quite rich and full on and really, very nice indeed. Definitely a matte formula that doesn’t feel matte at all.
