Ombre Hair: A Visit to Matthew Curtis Hair Design Salon – Beauty Rocks

You know that new hair feeling? That feeling you get when you leave the salon? When I leave the salon all those ‘because you’re worth it’ advertising messages ring through my head and I think ‘yeah, you know what? I am worth it!’ By the way I totally get how L’Oreal came up with that message when talking about hair because you do get a special feeling when your hair looks good. When your hair is in place and looks FAB everything else gets a face-lift too. You look more alive, brighter and pulled together.

My hair was definitely in need of a refresher when I visited the Matthew Curtis Hair Design Salon at The Rosewood London on Friday. First of all we need to talk about the location of this salon. It’s in The Rosewood – need I say more? If you haven’t been to the Rosewood Hotel in Holborn I would HIGHLY suggest a visit. It’s one of my favourite hotels in London and the afternoon teas there are the stuff of dreams. So visiting a salon in The Rosewood? No need to tell me twice.

In regards to my hair, I’ve recently been having a love affair with short hair and it was time to get a fresh chop because it had been growing out for a little while. In other words it was looking straggly. My hair is naturally wavy therefore I love a choppy bob because when it comes to my hair I am a ‘wash and go’ type of girl. While I love and have the latest hair gadgets and occasionally play with them to rev up my style, when it come to a day-to-day basis I barely use a hairdryer (please don’t tell anyone). But I do love styling products and volumising products – give me ALL the good stuff.

So what I’m looking for in a haircut is ease and wear-ability. In other words I don’t want a cut I am going to have to style every day. My waves generally style themselves and I love a bedhead, effortless look.

This is exactly what I described to the lovely Thomas who cut and coloured my hair at Matthew Curtis Design Salon – I wanted something easy but chic. And in regards to colour I wanted a bit of lightening. My hair is nearly natural. I say nearly natural because it is naturally ombre in the fact that I’ve had highlights growing out for months so the top half of my head is my own colour and it’s only a few strands throughout that have highlights. I asked Thomas for his recommendation on colour and he suggested just lightening the tips to create a more intense ombre effect. To me it all made sense so I said go for it!

So how do you do this for that cool girl ombre look? Well it involves a lot of backcombing which is a way to get the most natural look. So no foils here girls. The images might look scary (a bit like Medusa hey?) but there is nothing to be scared of.

What Thomas did next is backcomb the top sections of my hair and then added a colour solution onto the bottom of the hair that wasn’t backcombed. The colour solution was also mixed with L’Oreal Professional Smartbond which is very similar to Olaplex in that in minimises any damage to the bonds of your hair while colouring. In other words – GENIUS. I’m always a bit precious about my hair because it’s really fine so I try to take special care of it and be gentle with it. That’s why I think the Smartbond is amazing because it really reduces the damage that colouring does to your hair.

The colouring process was really fast – the colour only sat on my tips for about 25 minutes and then it was time to rinse and apply toner. The Smartbond Treatment was applied again to reduce any damage and was also followed by a Deep Conditioning Kerastase Treatment which smelled truly heavenly. Once my hair was washed, treated and rinsed it was time to focus on the cut.

Thomas knew I was all about the blunt cut so cut off a few inches, keeping it all one length with the hair in the front slightly longer than the hair in the back to give it some fullness.

The cut was super quick and then it was time to blow dry and voila! That new hair feeling…priceless. I’m so happy with my new hair and it feels lighter and brighter. And just in time for London Fashion Week. The timing could not be better!
