Spotlight On: Summer Sun Prep

Something that always brings back memories of summer is sunscreen. And this is a good thing, right? I have to admit as a child there wasn’t as much press about skin cancer and protecting your skin from everyday UVA/UVB rays. If only I knew, I’m sure I could have prevented a fine line or two! There also weren’t amazing suncare products on the market and choices were limited. However, nowadays we can be lucky that there are so many amazing products out there that both nourish our skin and protect it from harmful rays.

Two key players that have come out to play this summer in the realm of sun care are La Roche-Posay and Clarins. You can bet your pound/dollar/yen/euro that I will be using these in the sun. Protecting your skin in the sun reduces not only the chance of getting skin cancer but also protects against getting wrinkles, sun damage and sun spots/hyperpigmentation. And while we often think we are protected in the UK because of cloudy days, those harmful rays still get through that blanket of clouds.

La Roche-Posay has just launched their new Anthelios range that comes with both body and face care covered – in particular their Tinted BB Cream that contains a powerful SPF 50+ . The products are geared toward sensitive skin so this is great news in that the sun care products won’t irritate skin. I often break out if I use sunscreen on my face so am looking forward to being spot-free in the sun this year.

So how is Anthelios different from usual sun care? It works on a superior level to tackle the damage caused by long UVA which makes up 75% of the UV radiation reaching Earth. Long UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB and short UVA, generating free radicals that provoke irreversible damage within the skin.

Some key products in the range (from left to right in the below image) include:

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Comfort Cream 50+

Contains Baicalin, which is an antioxidant clinically proven to provide protection against UV rays.

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Tinted BB Cream SPF 50+

Gorgeous colour that will keep you from burning at the beach and looking good at the same time!

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Nutritive Oil

This is a lovely oil – like a dry oil because it doesn’t leave skin greasy. It sinks in like a dream and is invisible – no white marks!

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Baby Sun Cream 50+

Mums everywhere can also be sure their babies are covered too because La Roche has a Baby Sun Cream as well and you can be sure that you aren’t putting anything with any nasty ingredients on your baby’s skin.

La Roche-Posay has also launched a viral campaign called SKINCHECKER which raises awareness of how we can protect ourselves from skin cancer. Skin cancer is the only cancer that is visible to the eye and if detected early enough, can be treated effectively 90% of the time. You can learn more about the campaign here

Clarins is another key player in the fight against UV rays this summer and the great thing about Clarins is that they have covered after-sun care in their collection as well.

There is also plenty of protection for the face in the range and for getting a golden self-tan so that you don’t have to lie in the sun! The Clarins Sun Control Stick for Sun-Sensitive Areas is one of the star products – it is easy to carry out and about in your handbag so you will never be without sun protection.

A place that no one considers to wear sunscreen is actually on an airplane. Travelling during the day, above the clouds and in the sun, especially at a window seat exposes you to much more UV as you are that much closer to the sun. This Sun Control Stick is great to stick in your handbag for travel on the go and the great thing is that it doesn’t count as a liquid!

For my holiday in the sun, I will be packing Clarins Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster (launching in March), which is – get this – made to measure self tan! This is the first step in any pre-holiday prep as it allows you to customise your tan colour. You simply add a few drops of it into your body moisturiser and it will give you a natural glow from head to toe. This will also travel well with you as it comes in 30ml bottle. The reason it works is because it has a much higher concentration of self tanning active ingredients and the small size means you will just have more space for souvenirs to bring back!

Clarins have also got you covered with their Sun Care Oil Spray and Wrinkle Control Cream for Face. The Sun Care Oil Spray is brilliant because it can be used for both body and hair – and I LOVE a multi-tasking product. Never forget the hair can become very damaged in the summer so it’s important to protect your tresses from UV damage and from getting parched by the sun. This is a luxurious oil that is a dry oil – so no greasiness and no stains on your clothes! This gives a lovely sheen as well which looks very healthy. It’s also waterproof and sweat-resistant – who can complain about that?

After Sun care is also very important and again this is where Clarins is a key player. The After Sun Replenishing Moisture Care for Face and Décolleté feels very rich and soothing and made my skin baby-soft. The After Sun Ultra-Hydrating Moisturiser for the body soothes skin that has been exposed to the sun. It contains specific plant extracts that protects the skin from free radicals that continue to form even after sun exposure. Now that’s smart sun care. I will be packing them all!

Another product from Clarins that will make sure you are glowing this summer is the After Sun Shimmer Oil. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous shimmery body oil that will give you a beautiful glow all over.

It contains hazelnut oil to help soften skin and looks great with or without a tan (as you can see on my arm in the below image). This is another multi-tasker that can be used on hair to really make it shine. I will be using this at the first ray of sun on my first bare legged day of summer. This launches in May so you will have to wait until then…but this is truly a luxurious product that is worth it to indulge in.
