Since I moved to London I noticed myself getting pigmentation issues and blotchy dark spots on my forehead that I had never seen before. After going to the dermatologist for a consultation it was confirmed that I have melasma which is unfortunately incurable and is a pigmentation issue that to be honest, can be blamed on a number of things including hormones, ageing or onset by light therapy or strong sun. Therefore, I really wanted to do a post on skincare products to target melasma as I thought it was really important.
I have a guess that mine was onset by a round of IPL because I had never had issues before but once I had the IPL treatment I soon noticed blotchy brown spots on my forehead. The best recommendation I was given by the doctor is to go through a series of peels (light/lasers are not good for melasma as it can worsen it) and also invest in some serious skincare. Here are some of the products I’ve been using to help the pigmentation and to help break it up. Honestly, I have seen a difference and if you suffer from pigmentation I hope this really helps!
Skincare Products To Target Melasma
SkinCeuticals Brightening UV Defense SPF 30
If there is anything that you should pass on to your children in regards to skincare it is to ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN! Now not only is the SkinCeuticals Brightening UV Defense SPF 30 a sunscreen with state-of-the-art UV filters but it also targets hyperpigmentation at the same time and can reduce excess UV-induced pigmentation by up to 42.9%. WOW. I learned a couple of months ago after a consultation with a dermatologist that I have melasma which is a type of hyperpigmentation that is triggered by light such as LED light, sunlight, lasers, etc.
Mine was brought on after an IPL treatment which is a real shame as the treatment triggered the melasma. Some people are prone to it and others are not but you don’t know until it happens which is a real bummer and there is no cure. The only thing you can do is treat it via peels and use creams that target pigmentation and always, always wear sunscreen. So I’m pretty big on products that target pigmentation including this one. And did you know that 90% of visible ageing is caused by sun exposure? Honestly I really wish someone had told me this!

Here’s another fabulous power product if you suffer from pigmentation issues. This is a multi-layer product meaning that you can use this to layer over other skincare products. The formula works on cell turnover – i.e. exfoliation which helps break up pigmentation over time and makes the skin look more radiant. This is a great booster product to add into your existing skincare regime in the fight against pigmentation.
SkinCeuticals Retinol 3.0
I am a retinol newbie so was super excited to try the Skinceuticals Retinol 3.0. Retinol is a bit of a wonder ingredient – hailed for diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, uneven skin tone – pretty much anything! It also increases the production of Hyaluronic Acid in the dermis which is another benefit.
This formula also is perfect for absorption. Skinceuticals products sound scientific and that’s what they are but the names are not meant to scare anyone off – it’s a matter of picking what is right for you and it’s no wonder that the brand is a favourite among dermatologist the world over. Just one thing to note – if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant soon retinol is not suitable for you.
Elemental Herbology Vital Glow Overnight Resurfacing Cream
This product came to me with glowing reviews and I couldn’t wait to try it. You can use this in place of retinols if you wish as it works on stimulating cell turnover so it’s great for people who are prone to acne, pigmentation or dull skin. The formula, with Plant C-Stem, Natural AHAs and Granactive Retonoid works on skin overnight to bring back that glow. If you feel like your skin has been particular dull lately and needs a boost then this is definitely a product to look into!
Institut Esthederm Lightening Buffing Mask

I was instantly interested in this product after seeing the word ‘lightening’. This is a great product for melasma. I honestly just started using this for the last week and I can already see a difference – my skin tone looks more even and the pigmentation areas look slightly less pigmented.
You only need a little of this product as a little goes a long way. I use this as a serum both day and night. It’s great for the day because it’s got antioxidant protection which helps protect against free radicals. In regards to lightening the skin the serum uses Norwegian Kelp and Bearberry Extracts. I’m really impressed so far with this product and can’t wait to see the further effects!
