Fragrances are special. They set a mood, they make us feel good or they remind us of a special event or person. Fragrances can make us feel empowered, feminine, soft or sexy. There is no doubt the power of smell. I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on some fabulous fragrances this season and I wanted to share with you my top fragrances for 2019 – the fragrances that will most certainly set a mood.
If you haven’t tried any fragrances by Maison Margiela you are in for a treat. They are daring, unique and fabulous so make a perfect gift for your best friend simply because they are also so stylish so tick that box as well. The Mutiny Eau de Parfum contains notes of Mandarin Oil, Pink Pepper and Saffron so it does have a bite, in a good way. It starts out spicy and then dries down to a sexy, warm base with tuberose, leather and oud. A great fragrance for a night out on the town so makes a perfect Christmas gift for your stylish bestie. And the bottle is stunning too.
Atkinsons have been around since 1799 making them a heritage fragrance house with history. Hence, they know what they are doing when it comes to scents. Their latest launch, Gold Fair in Mayfair, is what I like to describe as ‘Christmas in a bottle’ with top notes of absinthe and nutmeg, deepened with cocoa beans, ambrox and vetiver. There are only 2000 bottles available and the fragrance is exclusive to Harrods making it a covetable one indeed. A perfect gift for yourself really, or a female friend who has a very refined taste.
The bottle itself is a work of art, inspired by the art at the gorgeous Burlington Arcade shop. The boxes were also handcrafted in Florence and each bottle is numbered, making it a very special fragrance indeed. The scent reminds me of Christmas – a warm hot drink, a flickering fire – you get the drift. The fragrance is gorgeous and would make an incredible Christmas gift – extra points for this one!
If you haven’t been to the Floral Street in Covent Garden you must get down there and have a look. I stopped by there a few months ago and was really impressed by the unique fragrances being sold. The fragrances have really unique combinations and they are affordable as well around the £40 mark. The Floral Street Chypre Sublime is a beautiful and very different (in a good way) fragrance packed with the best florals out there including damask rose, violets, patchouli and geranium. The patchouli gives the fragrance a spicy, refined scent and the bottles are beautiful as well, making a wonderful fragrance gift for Christmas. Floral Street fragrances are like none other, with interesting ingredient combinations – making them a fragrance gift not quite like any other.
I was lucky enough to pick up this fragrance right before jet-setting off to Australia, which is at the heart of everything that Goldfield & Banks does, using Australian botanicals and native herbs in all of their fragrances. The Southern Bloom Eau de Parfum uses the native Australian Brown Boronia at the heart of this stunning fragrance. The Brown Boronia blooms off the coast of Tasmania, Australia’s most southern island and this fragrance, because it uses such unique ingredients is truly unique itself.
What a lovely fragrance for an Australian friend or even for yourself if you have been to Australia and want to be reminded of it? It’s a very fresh fragrance and a unique one at that with notes of French blackcurrant absolute, Italian mandarin at the top and then boronia absolute, Indian jasmine sambac and ylang ylang in the middle, followed by Australian sandalwood, Italian iris and coconut accord with vetiver, amber and musk at the bottom. This is a complex fragrance and a beautiful one for the person who is discerning when it comes to fragrances.
Givenchy always have an air of style and luxury and it’s no different with their latest fragrance called L’Interdit. The first thing I thought about this fragrance was that it was different – which in this case, is a good thing. It’s the orange blossom that really cuts through here and gives this fragrance a fresh initial scent but then moves towards the deeper side with notes of jasmine, tuberose, vetiver, patchouli. I love the scent of orange blossom so I really enjoyed this fragrance and it would make a perfect gift for a stylish female who loves a bit of luxury.
The Merchant of Venice fragrances are always really unique – the bottles themselves are showstoppers and would be perfectly placed as decorative pieces in a chic home. I can really say I’ve seen nothing like some of their fragrances and their latest launch certainly caught my eye which is the beautiful Blue Tea Eau de Parfum which has a lovely light powdery tea scent.
The bottle reminds me of a gorgeous Chinese porcelain vase with a scene in iconic blue paint – which is why I mentioned that this would definitely not be out of place as a decorative piece in the home. This is also the first fragrance ever to use the blue tea flower.
The fragrance is inspired by Marco Polo’s travels to the Orient which is reflected in everything about this fragrance. The top notes are blue tea, rose, magnolia and neroli and move to a base of vetiver and musk so deepen out. This is a special fragrance for sure, a treasured gift for a loved one or a precious gift for yourself to be used on special occasions. It’s light and fresh as well so is a perfect daytime scent.
If you are looking for a natural fragrance then the Nuxe Le Soir des Possibles Eau de Parfum is certainly one to look at, with over 88.4% natural origin ingredients. It’s a stunning floriental fragrance that’s perfect for day or night with floral notes of Jasmin Sambac with Patchouli and Blackcurrant Sorbet. The bottle itself is elegant as well and perfect for the natural beauty lovers out there.
Guerlain I believe were the first to create a modern-day fragrance back in 1889 and one of the oldest fragrance houses around. I love a fragrance which contains a unique ingredient I haven’t seen elsewhere. This one contains vanilla from Papua New Guinea, sandalwood from Australia, jasmine from India and lavender from Provence, making it a truly global fragrance indeed, with the best ingredients sourced from all around the world. This is a beautiful, fresh and feminine scent and I do think it’s a crowd pleaser, so would make a lovely Christmas gift for yourself or for any of the fabulous females in your life. The fragrance is inspired by Angelina Jolie, a strong feminine figure I’m sure we could all agree.
I always find it hard finding gifts for my little sister – she loves a feminine fragrance so when I was looking through my fragrance stash I thought, aw, the DKNY Stories Eau De Parfum would be perfect for her. It’s feminine as I explained, with fruity overtones through including spicy Pink Pepper, Black Iris and Jasmine, with a Vanilla, Amber and Sandalwood base. What’s really unique about this fragrance is the top note of Pink Guava Mousse giving it a really nice sweet scent initially and then drying down to a deeper base. It’s a really pretty, everyday fragrance that makes a perfect gift for a feminine fragrance lover.
